Ok, so we dropped the series against the White Sox. It wasn't the end of the world and should have been expected to happen sooner or later. This is still a team with issues regardless of the winning streak that they were on. The thing to do now is to start the next great winning streak. It all starts with handing a beat-down to those hated Tigers of Detroit.

Let's do dis!

Tiger are playing really well. It's hard to say they may be one of the hottest teams right now. Can our pitching silence their big bats. Will be interesting to see. IDK how it's going to go hope we at least split though. I think it's very important we take game 1 though.

The M's last visit to Detroit (starting April 26) was the beginning of their turn around. They had just been shellacked by KC, lost a series at home to Detroit, and split a series at home with the lowly A's. Wedge tore the team a new one, and challenged them to be more aggressive. The next thing you know, the team rattled off a 5 game winning streak against good Tiger and Red Sox teams.

I hope they can keep it going. I'm predicting a series sweep in Detroit. I mean, the Tigers are good, but they're not GRRRRRRRRRRREAT!
Adopt-a-Players:
Eric Thames - What? Are we waiting for him to become LESS patient at the plate?
2013 AAA: .298/.390/.496/.887 5 HR 20 RBI

Forrest Snow - Things look rather Stark for the bastard of the north. Winter is coming.
2013 AA: 1-4, 3.86 ERA, 23 K, 5 BB, 1.095 WHIP
2012 AAA/AA: 5-9, 6.35 ERA, 99K, 67 BB, 1.674 WHIP

Gone But Not Forgotten (former adopt-a-players):
Matt Mangini - Signed a minor league contract with the Reds in the off season, but appears to have been handed his walking papers.
Mike Morse - HEY! Look who's back!!!!!
Jamal Strong - Let go after 2005. Played in the Yankees, Cubs and Braves systems. Now a regional scout for the Cards.

Detroit is one of two teams the Mariners play 10 time this year, and these will be our last 4 games with them. We have finished our season series with one AL team, the Baltimore Orioles, and we lost that one 2 games to 4.

As has been mentioned we have a 4 to 2 series lead right now. The unusual thing is that we lost 2 of 3 at home, but took all 3 in Detroit. Sweeping another series will be quite a challenge because it's a 4 game series, not a 3 game one.

Remember how the Mariners had a pattern of winning the first two games of a series only to lose the third game? They just reversed that in White Sox-land. What does this all mean? Absolutely nothing.

It's a four game series between two teams who think they have a shot at the postseason, but have long odds of getting there. They're also one of our rivals right now for the Wild Card, so it is an important series. Currently the Mariners are 1.5 games behind the Tigers, so we need to win the series to pass them in the standings. Let's take 3 of 4!

If we split with the Tigers, we'll have a 3-4 road trip, which would be great. If we go 3-1 with the Tigers we would have a 4-3 road trip that would really be cool heading into the big six game homestand vs (LAA and the PHIL's) and the Dr Naka visit. Then the goofy three gamer at Washington Nationals followed by the big nine game homestand (FLOR, ATL, SD,) thanks to Bono and U2. It's a good time to make hay while the sun is shining.

just looked at the transaction wire and they let Manny Delcarmen go on 6/1. Not a suprise.

It seems all games are big now. The Tigers are in our grill and then we come home to face the Angels who we have gained some ground on recently. A good point raised in the Sox game thread and here is that last night's game is one we would have lost in years back. Jamie served up a fat one but the guys battled back to pick him up. Vargas with the tough luck no win but he kept us in the game.

The M's mission, should they choose to accept it, is to leapfrog the Tigers in the wildcard standings.

It's going to be tough to win tonight, no Figgins in the Lineup

Edit: No Smoak or Cust either for that matter (Ichiro on the other hand is playing RF and batting Leadoff)

I think the plan is to run into the ground so that he body doesn't hold up and he's forced to retire. But that's just my wild speculation.

Tonight's line-up is really exciting to me. Aside from no Smoak, this is the kind of line-up I think a lot of folks would love to see more often.

1. Ichiro RF
2. Ryan SS
3. Kennedy 1B
4. Olivo C
5. Guti CF
6. Carp DH
7. Halman LF
8. Rodriguez 3B
9. Wilson 2B
Go Cougs

Ichiro 9
Ryan 6
Kennedy 3
Olivo 2
Gutierrez 8
Carp DH
Halman 7
Rodriguez 5
Wilson 4

Fister 1

Wedge is not a numbers guy. So to say that it's a bad use of numbers, is not correct. He doesn't use numbers. Wedge has said he's going to get these guys in the lineup and that is what he's doing. He tried to load up with lefty hitters the other night and what did it get him ? A bunch of goose eggs. Carp's a lefty, Louie Rod will hit from the left, Kennedy hits from the left, Ryan goes the other way and Olivo hits them where they aint'. Guti has had a couple of good games at the dish. Go M's !!

The fact is that the Mariners are throwing out a lousy line-up against one of the game’s best pitchers, and that’s on Eric Wedge. He’s shown that he has a very low opinion of the value of a walk, and it looks like Cust is going to be the one to lose the most playing time with Carp on the roster. That’s not an upgrade, and it’s a bad use of the players he has on hand.

I agree that it's a bit suspect to put Smoak on the bench today, especially given he hit a HR in one of his 2 ABs against Verlander, but I think these attacks on Wedge are rather unfounded. The man has done a great job with this team so far, and players like Wilson do need to get a chance to play from time to time. Plus Figgins isn't playing, so what reason does anyone have to complain? :hypocrite:

The thing that really gets me, though, is the assertion that playing Carp today is a bad idea. After all, why would anyone want to see what someone who was on pace to hit six thousand home runs in AAA can do at the ML level?

For those who're lamenting no Cust please remember he's career 4/20 with 12K/1BB vs Verlander.
Smoak is simply ice cold now and there're hotter commodities in the roster.
I like Wedge a lot because he's trying everything to make this ballculb better - as for the present and mostly for the future, since I don't really believe we have a single chance to make the playoffs this season.

On the contrary here's a different, fair, competent and respectful point of view:

Kinda hard to get excited about a line up without smoak in it for me. My excitement for the line up will come when Ackley is called up. Leave Ichiro alone don't bench or anything. There's a reason he's in the line up everyday he's a different caliber player and a different pedigree than anyone else on our roster. Ichiro has given us 10 amazing years we can deal with a month or 2 of struggles. When he bounces back he'll be back and in full force. Instead of demanding for his head how bout you pull for him to turn it around. Our line up becomes a lot better when Ichiro gets it going. After 10 years you'd think he'd get a little more slack.
