So I was rolling a few things around in my head today, including whether or not we should trade Ichiro for some young impact pitching, whether or not Felix actually is possible to trade due to the rare combination of factors surrounding surplus value young superstars like him. Ultimately, they weren't all that much fun, and led me to wander aimlessly through b-ref and fangraphs for a few hours.

Then I got thinking about the Ramos+random low-minors pitcher for Capps trade, and thought to myself, "Could we trade Aardsma for a similar return? If so, what form would it take?"

Obviously catchers who project to be league-average aren't all that easy to find (as we've learned in the last few years), so I thought I should forget sifting through piles and piles of player profiles looking for a catcher who fit that description, and instead just go with what Tim Dierkes & Co. come up with for Aardsma. Here's the spots they think he could land:

Detroit Tigers: They don't really offer any insight as to who might come back, but they mentioned both DA and League are on Detroit's radar. Not sure who comes back, and I've run out of steam searching player databases.

SF Giants: We've gone over the rumored counter issued by JackZ, asking for Pablo Sandoval in exchange for Aardsma plus Lopez. There are probably other fits here, but that's the one they listed.

Boston Red Sox: They mention that the BoSox will have surplus OF to trade, but I don't think we'd be talking about Ellsbury. They have a plethora of role players like Bill Hall, Eric Patterson and Daniel Nava. Nava, 27, is actually pretty interesting, with a minor league slash line of .341/.434/.543. I know the local 'sphere has discussed MIF Jed Lowrie before, so he probably belongs in the discussion somehow.

The above three were directly linked at MLBTR, for whatever that's worth (more than the cynics would suggest, but less than the regular posters there believe, probably). The next one is own idea.

New York Mets: They reportedly inquired on Scott Downs, and were told the price would be Kirk Nieuwenhuis plus a minor leaguer. They refused, obviously. I would be thrilled with a return of Nieuwenhuis-level talent, but I'm not sure there's a great spot for him on the team, barring some major trade.

So, assuming we can't get quite as much value as we asked for from SF, and also assuming that Aardsma isn't *quite* as good as Capps, what do you all think the D.A. should get us? I'd probably be happy with Nava or Lowrie, even though Nava's not a perfect fit for the club.

#Mariners may move Aardsma on Saturday, source says. He's had six straight scoreless outings. #MLB #SEA #Seattle #TRADES

Please trade him.

True talent 4 ERA relievers are simply just not that valuable and Aardsma is unlikely to even be worth his '11 arbitration salary.. Lets see what kind of prospect Z can nab.

Agreed. And for whatever reason, our team hasn't historically had a problem with assembling bullpens on the cheap. He's been fun, but turn him into a dice-roll at getting a player who could contribute to our next serious run.

#1 reason I want Aardsma traded?

So I don't have to hear Dave Simms stupid "Another cased closed by the DA!!!!" call. It almost annoys me as much as his incessant chortling.

Looks like Ken Rosenthal says the Rays are interested in AZ's Chad Qualls. I understand that Qualls is a cut above Aardsma (even WITH his ridiculous ERA this year), but it does add a team to the bullpen market.

Qualls isn't the elite guy he used to be...but yes...he's one notch above the Aardsma class. Still...there are tons of teams who could potentially use one more relief pitcher. I think Aardsma will get traded today...and maybe one other player (Jack Wilson or Russell Branyan)

Please, let it be Kothcman instead of Branyan. I would like something shiney from TB for Aardsma. Please?

TB just successfully acquired Qualls...I think they're out.

There are lots of other options though...

Maybe we could package him with Jack Wilson to DET?

If he can't get a decent prospect, maybe we can just dump a bad contract instead. That would be over $9mil freed in '11.

We need to trade Aardsma to the D-Backs. It looks like their bullpen may blow another game for them tonight.

Pay no attention to all the frustrating losses. It's all part of the master plan. Even number years are bad luck for the Mariners. It's all about 2011, and preparing for a World Series run next year.
