I was listening to a replay of a Nolan Ryan interview on the Jim Rome show and Nolan said only three guys charged the mound in his long career: Willie McCovey, Dave Winfield and Robin Ventura. Nolan said he was happy when finally a little guy rushed the mound. It was the last year of Ryan's career.

Shannon Drayer down played the whole Peter Gammons story about Ichiro talking to the owner. She came on the Dave Groz Show (Noon-3pm Daily; 710 KIRO Sports Radio) and said it was a big stretch. She cited the way of life in Japan and behavior. I think she is talking of class and status. Sure, Suzuki might be of a different class then the japanese Owner, but I don't think so. Suzuki's play on the ball field and his god like status in Japan has launched him above the class structure.

I was listening to the enemy coaches show on the KIRO pregame show as they talked to Showalter and I could have sworn the team he was talking about was the Mariners but no, it was the O's. Same thing when Adam Jones talked to the seattle guys and mentioned that the new coaching staff was sitting back and watching with an idea for the fundamentals. Again, I could have been hearing a conversation with one of the young guys on the Mariners. O's and M's in the same boat.

It's Lee vs Price.

The two biggest leads in baseball's playoff races belong to Texas (67-49) -- up 8 1/2 games on the Angels in the AL West -- and Tampa Bay, which boasts a five-game edge over Boston for the wild card. The Rays also pulled within one game of New York for the East lead after a 3-2 win over Baltimore on Sunday.

Rays beat Rangers 6-5. With the Rays win and the Yankees loss, it's dead even in the AL East. Boston 5.5 back in the standings.

W: L. Cormier (4-3)
L: C. Lee (10-6)
S: R. Soriano (34)

Former Mariner and former Aquasox, Rafael Soriano notched his 34th save. Soriano started out as an outfielder with the Frogs and was converted to pitcher, which seems to have worked out for him.

Cliff Lee got tagged for all 6 runs in that game. He also kind of imploded in the game before against the Yankees.

It seems he is not getting much run support but he should be used to this, he played for the Mariners...

He's mostly a second baseman, but he'll probably play shortstop for the Rainiers. With the promotion of Woodward to the Mariners, the Rainiers had to use their reserve infielder at SS, and had no middle infield back-up. This is a sharp contrast from the beginning of the season when the Rainiers had excess starting position players.

My newest 2013 AAP's:
Carson Smith, Generals bullpen pitcher
Carlos Peguero, Rainiers outfielder
Rich Poythress, Rainiers first baseman

I was looking at the Tuesday night box for the Rainiers who lost 8-4 to Albuquerque Isotopes of the Dodgers system and the winning pitcher was Corcoran. Further investigation shows it's Tim Corcoran, who is the older brother of former Mariner, Roy Corcoran who is with the Round Rock Express in the Houston system.

Hot Stone League

Cliff Lee's been great for Texas, but he misses that mighty Mariner offense

Larry Stone, Seattle Times

Quote

In his first game with Texas, the Rangers scored one run in a 6-1 loss to Baltimore.

In his second game, they scored two runs in a 3-2 loss to the Red Sox.

In his third game, they scored three runs in a 3-2 win over the Angels.

And then three runs last night.

That's a total of nine runs scored by the Rangers in four starts -- 2.25 per start. While Lee was the Mariners, they scored 63 runs in his 13 starts -- 4.8 per start.

Now we're talking football?

This thread is in danger of being moved to Off Topic. Before it was just in danger of being moved to MLB. Try to keep this tied into the Mariners somehow, please.
Adopt-a-Players:
Eric Thames - What? Are we waiting for him to become LESS patient at the plate?
2013 AAA: .298/.390/.496/.887 5 HR 20 RBI

Forrest Snow - Things look rather Stark for the bastard of the north. Winter is coming.
2013 AA: 1-4, 3.86 ERA, 23 K, 5 BB, 1.095 WHIP
2012 AAA/AA: 5-9, 6.35 ERA, 99K, 67 BB, 1.674 WHIP

Gone But Not Forgotten (former adopt-a-players):
Matt Mangini - Signed a minor league contract with the Reds in the off season, but appears to have been handed his walking papers.
Mike Morse - HEY! Look who's back!!!!!
Jamal Strong - Let go after 2005. Played in the Yankees, Cubs and Braves systems. Now a regional scout for the Cards.

Longing for more long balls - Jose Lopez

By Jerry Crasnick ESPN.com

Quote

Jose Lopez

(64.7 AB/HR ratio, compared to 24.5 in 2009)

"He's kind of an enigma," an NL scout said of Lopez. That's a diplomatic way of saying that Lopez doesn't exactly bowl people over with his work ethic or passion for the game. It was telling when he hit 25 homers for a power-deprived Seattle team last year, and rumors persisted that the Mariners were shopping him around all winter.

Will we have a triple crown winner this year ? As you know, we have not had a triple crown winner since Carl Yaztrzemski (44, 121, .326) in 1967. Ther has been nine in the AL and five in the NL in history. Ted Williams did it twice in the AL and Rogers Hornsby did it twice in the NL.

Triple Crown - Baseball Almanac

There is a chance to have a triple crown winner in both leagues. In the AL, Miguel Cabrera, of the Tigers leads in RBI's with 98 and A-Rod is nipping at his heals with 97. Cabrera trails Jose Batista in home runs 37 to 30. Cabrera trails Josh Hamilton in average (.330 to .356). Hamilton had a terrible series against the Rays, and he and the Rangers were swept. Hamilton is 11 back in HR's and not in the to five in RBI's.

In the NL, Fat Albert Pujols leads by six in RBI's and is tied in HR"s with 31. Fat Albert trails Joey Votto in average .314 to .324. Votto trails in HR's by three and eight in the RBI race.

All the players involved are in the playoff chase, except for Cabrera with the Tigers, who are way back.

In the bonehead play of the week, the Padres are at the Cubs this afternoon and not only did the Cubs blow a 2-1 lead, but to add insult to injury, the Padres had a guy in a rundown between home in third. The runner from second scooted into third. The Cubs Catcher Koyie Hill chased the runner within three feet of third and tagged him out and then he put the tag on the runner on third, for some reason. Then, the catcher, with no time called as of yet, turns his back to third base and starts to walk to the mound with the ball in his glove. No one was covering the plate and the runner trotted in to make it 5-2 Padres. LOL
