Wow... just.. wow. 14Ks in 7 innings and no walks.

And to think. If we wouldn't have swept the A's the last week of the '08 season and the Nats wouldn't have thrown the final 3 games of their season.. we woulda had that guy.

Wow.

The Nats were gonna get him no matter what it took to tank 2008. They set their sights on Strasburg earlier than the Mariners did, and were well under .500 by the time the M's realized they were done for. The Mariners sure tried to tank 2008 once that season was lost, but no one could out-tank a team as collectively bad as the 2008 Nats.

Let's see how he handles a more disciplined and experienced MLB lineup than the Pirates.

I'm predicting a 'Mark Prior'-esque career for Strasburg. Hits the league like a ton of bricks, has a fabulous year or three, then has a major injury and is never the same again.

The crystal ball is a little cloudy, but that's what I read. The tea leaves only tell me that he'll be lucky in love.
Adopt-a-Players:
Eric Thames - What? Are we waiting for him to become LESS patient at the plate?
2013 AAA: .298/.390/.496/.887 5 HR 20 RBI

Forrest Snow - Things look rather Stark for the bastard of the north. Winter is coming.
2013 AA: 1-4, 3.86 ERA, 23 K, 5 BB, 1.095 WHIP
2012 AAA/AA: 5-9, 6.35 ERA, 99K, 67 BB, 1.674 WHIP

Gone But Not Forgotten (former adopt-a-players):
Matt Mangini - Signed a minor league contract with the Reds in the off season, but appears to have been handed his walking papers.
Mike Morse - HEY! Look who's back!!!!!
Jamal Strong - Let go after 2005. Played in the Yankees, Cubs and Braves systems. Now a regional scout for the Cards.

Dude pitched against the Pirates. He might have the same luck against the Astros or the Mariners. Let's see what he's like against a major league team. What he got was a classic soft landing against a terrible lineup.

We're not going to see how good he really is methinks until he faces the Braves at Turner Field at the end of the month. His next three likely opponents (Indians, Royals, ChiSox in interleague play) have plenty of weaknesses.

So expect his first four MLB starts to look really good... better than he may actually be. Oh, he's good. He's just not 2 K's per inning good.

More on this at DCB.

It could compare to Mark the Bird or Fernando Mania. He has four pitches and that great moving fastball.

Strasburg complained that he slid in the landing area. The home town Cleveland grounds crew went out to tune up the mound and the Cleveland fans boo. 6-1 Washinton in the sixth. 8 K, 90 pitches for Strasburg.

I did a Net Runs piece on Strasburg's debut. There's a surprise or two if anyone's interested.

I may do one later for this start in Cleveland as well. He did walk five but 8 K's indicates he was still tough against a marginally better Cleveland lineup (that also had the DH since this was in Cleveland). And if he was struggling with his footing on a slippery pitching mound, that could be a mitigating factor as to why he struggled.

The Nats scored one to take Strasburg off the hook. His line: 7 inn, 1 run, 4 hits, 0 bb, 87 pitches. The Nats are trying to keep his innings down this year.

I missed last week and yes Strasburg was on TV. Well, he's on TV again on Fox right now and the turnstyles are working overtime in DC. Some mutterings that Strasburg should go to the all star game this year. It's a little late for this year but he couldn't hurt the gate.

I find this whole Strasburg hasn't earned an All Star position yet thing rediculous. I was listening to Joe Morgan go off on how he hasn't earned anything and that he would be taking someone's spot that belongs. Well, sorry Joe, but does Matt Capps really belong on the NLAS roster? He hasn't earned anything, either. The rule that all teams must be represented means that non-worthy players end up on the All Star team every single year. Steven Strasburg should be the Nat's representative for 2010. It's just that simple.

Agree. It would be good for baseball if Strasburg was there. Omar Infante over Joey Votto ?
