They were all over Steve Baron, this week's Hot Stove radio 710-AM. Got a bit of it up at SSI. 19-year-old high school catcher, M's took him with the #33 overall, dragged him out to Seattle over his dad's near-dead body. :- ) Might have been a top-10 pick if he'd spent three years at Duke first, so the M's mighta got a value. Very popular kid the first few days in camp, they say.

I don't know if you guys have seen this, but here is an excellent compilation video of Baron executing various defensive plays (and some hitting, I think) while in high school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMRcB_0hUtAIt's an absolute joy to watch. Of course, it's a highlight package, so you can't expect him to be this good on every play going forward, but it shows what he's capable of.

Baron is advanced defensively, but his bat is very questionable. Usually with catchers it is the other way around. At what level do you start a kid like that. He probably could hold his own defensively in AA, yet his bat would probably be over matched in low A.

It's his bat that needs to develop to give the M's real value... so I'd say stick him wherever they think is best for his offensive development, with no other considerations. So if his bat belongs in A ball, start him out there. I'd think defensive skills are something that can be honed and maintained at just about any level.

Last year he started at Pulaski, which was a little bit of a challenge for him. Most high schoolers with questionable offensive skills start in Arizona as far as I know. Pulaski is more of a college pick landing spot. I don't see Baron playing in A-ball next season, at least not for the whole season. I think he repeats Pulaski and then, if the season goes well, gets bumped up to Everett late or something.
No rush on him with Moore and Johnson under club control for the next 5-6 years.

Makes sense to me. Arizona will be the right place for him to start the year if they have to completely tear his swing down and rebuild it.

Of course, it's a highlight package, so you can't expect him to be this good on every play going forward, but it shows what he's capable of. My count on a rough spray with his hitting: 6 balls hit to Left, 2 to Center, and 7 to Right (including a very impressive opposite field homerun) with at least 1 HR to each field, I think. I wonder if this is something the scouts and FO like about him, offensively, even if he's not that advanced yet. In the video, at least, he was already showing the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Granted, that's with aluminum bats, which is always a big caveat. More videos, please! And I gotta link that vid of him in my sig to give mucho praise to him as my Adoptee! QUOTE (Beastie Boys @ Feb 28 2010, 01:55 PM) Catcher of the future?? This kids catch and release is absolutely amazing. I hope to see him in an M's uniform in a few years. It really, really is. In the vid Shields linked, there were numerous times he had to either stop or intentionally lob the ball because the other player was too slow to the bag. He's quick.

These guys need some love and I'm gonna give it to 'em! Dennis Raben - abandoned and left out by his former Adopt-a-Parent at the first sign of trouble. I'm here to dust him off and help him through rehab. Come on, Dennis! Nick Franklin and Steven Baron - Already, they are being heralded as blunders by the Front Office as irreprehensible mistakes for being taken early in the draft. I think we need to give them, and the guys in charge, a chance before mobbing Big Z. C'mon, boys! Get to it!

Speaking of catchers. Why has Travis Scott been stuck at High Desert the past three years? He isn't great but I would think that he could have progressed some in AA. Am I crazy?
