Make a poll and write what you predicted.
Now we will know how you can predict.

I voted for 10 to 25%

Davidoff is the only one I know who has voted for Edgar so far. Most who have made their ballots known (that I have seen, anyway) have not.

Dave Cameron, via Twitter: "@ProBallNW He's got ~25 public yes votes so far. Arnold/Stone have both said they would/did. Looks like he'll get ~30-40% this year."

6 votes so far but only few posters write what their prediction is.
Give C points for who predicted right.

And for those who are far off ....

I expect 20-25% for Edgar, but I hope for more. I REALLY hope the AL writers come together and vote in a bloc for Gar so that the NL can't say "even the guys who FOLLOW your stupid upstart league don't think he should get in, so why should I?"

I'd love 40+%. It'd mean Gar has a good chance to eventually make the Hall.

This is the first time in a while I've actually cared what the writers think about a ballplayer. Fingers crossed!

According to that graph, Alomar, Blyleaven and Dawson are the only ones with a chance and thet're all on the fence. It looked like Mac was projecting out at 30%.

So based on what we've got so far on that spreadsheet, Baines, Galllaraga, Mattingly, McGriff, Murphy, Parker and Trammell are at risk of falling off the ballot. I think Trammell, Mattingly, McGriff, Parker and Trammell should be able to get enough to make it to next year, but we'll see.

Here's what some of the writers who didn't vote for Edgar had to say:

Dave van Dyck Chicago Tribune
QUOTE
No to Edgar Martinez, the best designated hitter in history (yes, better than Harold Baines) but with an open mind to future years.

Source

Jeff Blair The Globe Could not access the article

Hal Bodley MLB.com
QUOTE
There's been talk about Edgar Martinez being elected to the Hall of Fame since 2004, when Paul Molitor became the first designated hitter to be inducted.

Martinez is one of those players who may eventually make it, but I cannot see it happening on the first ballot.

When Molitor was elected, he was considered Cooperstown's first DH because he spent more than 1,000 games in that spot. Martinez, on the other hand, spent the majority of his career (1,412 of 2,055 career games, all with the Mariners) as a DH.

Martinez won batting titles in 1992 and 1995. His career average is .312, and he hit 309 homers.

Those are impressive numbers, but I wonder how many other hitters would accumulate similar stats if they did not have to play defense.

Jeff Fletcher MLB Fanhouse
QUOTE
Martinez spent all 18 seasons with Seattle, winning two AL batting titles and finishing with a .312 average and 309 homers. A seven-time All-Star, he was a designated hitter in 1,412 of 2,055 career regular-season games.

Bill Kennedy The Times Not about Edgar but I found this comment interesting
QUOTE
Rick Freeman, the knowledgeable baseball columnist for The Times, does not have a Hall of Fame vote, although he certainly deserves one. He said recently that if he possessed an HOF ballot, he would have voted for Alomar, Blyleven, Dawson, Larkin, McGwire, Raines and Trammell. When he talks I listen, so all of them will receive consideration in another year.

Danny Knobler CBS Sports
QUOTE
I don't rely totally on stats, but 309 home runs and 1,261 RBI (Martinez's career totals) aren't enough to make him stand out. He made seven All-Star teams, but that puts him in line with Don Mattingly, Dave Parker, Tim Raines and Alan Trammell, other outstanding players who have not gotten my vote. He was in the top five in MVP voting just once. His postseason numbers were average at best.
Designated pioneer? Martinez's bat not enough

Sean McClelland Dayton Daily News No comment about Edgar but what standards?

Come to think of it, that may be the best argument for checking that Alomar box. Really, if we’re using history as a guide, there’s no reason to start letting character get in the way now.

I considered Martinez and probably will vote for him some day, but all his numbers were accrued as a designated hitter and I have a problem with that. Finally, I voted for Alomar. I hope I don't regret it.

Those guys aren't going to fall off. If you ask me two days from now, there may be one, two or three more names on the ballot as I continue to consider Larkin, Edgar Martinez, Fred McGriff, Lee Smith, Jack Morris and the rest. We have until Dec. 31 to get them in, and I plan on wrestling with it for a few more days.

Phil Rogers Chicago Tribune

Alomar is the only one of 15 first-timers on the ballot to get my vote. Edgar Martinez was a great hitter but not a Hall of Famer. Barry Larkin was a great shortstop, but he isn't either.

Twenty don’t get in: Roberto Alomar, Kevin Appier, Harold Baines, Ellis Burks, Andres Galarraga, Pat Hentgen, Mike Jackson, Eric Karros, Ray Lankford, Barry Larkin, Edgar Martinez, Don Mattingly, Tim Raines, Shane Reynolds, David Segui, Lee Smith, Alan Trammell, Robin Ventura, Todd Zeile.

Bob Smizik Pittsburg Post Gazette
QUOTE
Edgar Martinez: He was the pre-eminent designated hitter of the 1990s, a professional batsman who hit over .300 11 times. He won two batting titles. But as a middle-of-the-lineup hitter, he had only 309 home runs and 1,261 RBIs. Not good enough.
Source

Carl Steward Oakland Tribune
QUOTE
Tough omissions: Barry Larkin, who may get my vote someday but only when I decide it's also time for Alan Trammell; and Dave Parker, whose all-around qualifications are too similar to Harold Baines, who isn't a Hall of Famer. Edgar Martinez? Amazing hitter, but no.

Do any of these guys know that there's more to batting statistics than career totals? For goodness' sake Baines had 2700 more at bats than Edgar, of course he's going to have more home runs, RBI, and hits.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but look at their 162 game averages:
Baines: 22 HR, 93 RBI, 164 hits, 28 doubles, .820 OPS
Edgar: 24 HR, 99 RBI, 177 hits, 41 doubles, .933 OPS

Yep, Harold is definitely better across the board.

Edgar Martinez produced a 1.000+ OPS 5 times in a 6 year span. Harold Baines produced a .900+ OPS just 5 times in his entire career.
