MLB | Elbow surgery to sideline J.J. Putz for 10-12 weeks

times story

Quote

WASHINGTON — New York Mets reliever J.J. Putz will have surgery to remove a bone spur and pieces of bone from the back of his right elbow and is expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks.

The former Mariner was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday. The surgery on his pitching elbow is scheduled for Tuesday.

Picked up in the offseason to lock down the eighth inning ahead of new closer Francisco Rodriguez, Putz is just 1-4 with a 5.22 earned-run average and two saves for the Mets. He has allowed eight runs and nine hits in 1-1/3 innings in his most recent outings. He complained of pain after Thursday's game in Pittsburgh.

News: Ibanez, responding to speculation that he might be juicing, said Tuesday that he has never used performance-enhancing drugs, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Spin: "You can have my urine, my hair, my blood, my stool - anything you can test," Ibanez said. "I'll give you back every dime I've ever made" if the test is positive. Ibanez was reacting to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday morning that highlighted an article posted on the blog Midwest Sports Fans.

I don't know why I can't equate Alex Rodriguez as a former mariner, when I look at the daily box scores, but he is. Perhaps because it seems like a very long time ago when he played for the m's. Maybe it is because i'm still P.O.ed that all the great players from the glory years, except for Edgar and Bone, left Seattle for greener pastures. Whatever the case, I'll take a look at what A-Rod is doing.

Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez came off the DL on the 10th of May. He had that hip thing, as we remember. With 118 ab's in 34 games, (.237/.396/.517/.913) Alex average is down to the low .230's but his obp is good at just under (.400). He has 6 doubles and 9 home runs, with 26 rbi's. Saturday he hit his 562nd home run of his career. Also on Saturday, he earned a jack cust hat trick (a home run, a walk and a strike out in the same game).

where did the term hat trick come from ?

Quote

"The feat of a bowler who takes three wickets by three successive balls: originally considered to entitle him to be presented by his club with a new hat or some equivalent."

The Oxford English Dictionary

Quote

in the 1940s, a Toronto haberdasher used to give Maple Leaf hockey players free hats when they scored three goals in a game.

Gil Meche throws a four hit shutout against the D-Backs.

Quote

Meche, however, was not about to turn this game over to the bullpen, although Hillman had Joakim Soria and John Bale warming up.

"If I was really tired or if I felt my arm was getting heavy after 110, I would have taken myself out," Meche said. "It is my career, too. By going out there, I've got to make sure I'm good enough to throw. That's why I made the decision. I told him, 'Look I feel fine. Let me go out there and get it.' So he let me do it.

"I think everyone in this clubhouse understands when the starting pitcher has a chance to get a shutout, you don't want to waste it. It doesn't happen too often, especially for me. It's good to finally get one as a Royal. I don't have too many complete games [six], much less shutouts, and I wanted to go out there and get this one and felt I had a good chance to do it.

"It took a lot of pitches, especially on the last guy, he was killing me, but I was able to finish it."

Quote

"It is something about the heat that brings back the Cajun in me," Meche said. "Pitching in summer leagues and in high school [in Louisiana], sweating my butt off, something about it I like doing it. One thing that helped me out was [Doug] Davis worked so slow, it helped me out between innings, kinda caught my breath, cooled off in the batting cage with the AC. I felt pretty fresh."

Meche is 14-4 for his career in interleague play.

Former Mariner and current Royal Willie Bloomquist went 1-4 and scored a run. He is hitting .290 (40-138) for the season. (.290/.351/.391). He has 12 sb with 2 cs.

Also with the Royals is Jose Guillen is hitting (.254/.348/.405/.753) 7 hr and 27 rbi.

Tug Hulett pinch ran and scored a run.

EDIT: Add Hulett note.
