WASHINGTON — New York Mets reliever J.J. Putz will have surgery to remove a bone spur and pieces of bone from the back of his right elbow and is expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks.

The former Mariner was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday. The surgery on his pitching elbow is scheduled for Tuesday.

Picked up in the offseason to lock down the eighth inning ahead of new closer Francisco Rodriguez, Putz is just 1-4 with a 5.22 earned-run average and two saves for the Mets. He has allowed eight runs and nine hits in 1-1/3 innings in his most recent outings. He complained of pain after Thursday's game in Pittsburgh.

I don't know why I can't equate Alex Rodriguez as a former mariner, when I look at the daily box scores, but he is. Perhaps because it seems like a very long time ago when he played for the m's. Maybe it is because i'm still P.O.ed that all the great players from the glory years, except for Edgar and Bone, left Seattle for greener pastures. Whatever the case, I'll take a look at what A-Rod is doing.

Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez came off the DL on the 10th of May. He had that hip thing, as we remember. With 118 ab's in 34 games, (.237/.396/.517/.913) Alex average is down to the low .230's but his obp is good at just under (.400). He has 6 doubles and 9 home runs, with 26 rbi's. Saturday he hit his 562nd home run of his career. Also on Saturday, he earned a jack cust hat trick (a home run, a walk and a strike out in the same game).

Rafael Soriano pitching for the braves is 1-1 with a 1.52 era and 5 saves in 28 games. In 29.2 innings, Soriano has allowed 19 hits, 11 bb's and 37 so.

Gil Meche throws a four hit shutout against the D-Backs.

Matt Thornton is 4-1 with 2 blown saves and 10 holds for the White Sox in 2009. he has a 1.85 era and a 1.07 WHIP. The m's faced Thornton early this year in Chicago and they were blown away by his 98 mph heat.

he was the 22nd pick of the 1998 draft by the M's.
