I was doing my "Sunday night add/drop" for my fantasy team last night and was in need of a closer....
I have Mariano (who's not doing so great, but you know it's just a matter of time) and also George Sherrill (who's been hot and cold). Of the closers that were available, the reports were pretty favorable for none other than Ryan Franklin. So, in a desperation move, I picked him up. Imagine my glee when I got home tonight just in time to see Franklin record his 5th save of the season.

Oh, and the pitcher he save the game for tonight (vs the Braves)?

... Joel Pineiro - who has won his first four starts of this young season.

edit to add: Joel is the first Cardinal pitcher to win his first four starts since Matt Morris (didn't catch the date)

Go figure.

Raul's 6th home run came with an exclamation point...

8th inning grand slam to put the Phillies ahead of the Nats (13-11) to stay.

Jamie Moyer 3-1 with a 5.65 era. jamie goes for win 250 (249-186) thursday night at the Mets.

moyer has gone 5 to six innings per outing in his five starts.

it's still early and when the weather warms he should settle down. it's nice to have an offense behind you with the phillies.

Shin-Soo (what's up with) Choo is hitting 253/402/440 . he has six doubles a homer a triple and six sb in 91 at bats.

EDIT: add shin-soo choo

well it's crunch time in the big unit goes for 300 in seattle thing. always a long shot, it is now a longer shot then Mine That Bird winning the derby at 50 to 1. the big unit has to win monday's start vs washington and the 5-16 start vs the mets to be on for 300 in seattle. no one thought Mine That Bird could do it and many doubt randy can win three in a row. Mine That Bird didn't do too bad in running a 2:02.66. Smarty Jones ran the derby at 2:04 and many others ran 2:02's. Certainly conditions play a big part of horse racing, as well as how things shake out. the standard is Secretariat, who ran a 1:59 2/5. I think the big unit has it in him. if anyone can do it, he can. wouldn't it be great to see johnson face griffey in his attempt at 300 ?

it wasn't pretty but randy johnson picked up win number 298 monday night. the big unit went five innings. he let in four runs on eight hits. johnson was helped by the giants offense who scored early and often. as talked of above, if the big unit wins vs the mets on the 18th, then he'll go for 300 in seattle.

giants win !

Putz had an MRI on Wednesday that revealed inflammation in the back of the elbow, which has caused a bone spur, Mets GM Omar Minaya said."

Quote

The reliever took a shot of anti-inflammatory medication, which will cause him to sit for two days at least. Putz has joined the team in San Francisco after being seen by team doctor David Altchek.

"He's had this spur before, and guys sometimes play with it," Minaya said.
