in a hit and run accident last night. After throwing 6 shut out innings a driver in a mini-van ran a red light, and reports are that Adenhardt was one of the passengers in the car that was hit, and was killed.
Sad news for the family of the 22 year old rookie.

There are MLB topics and then there are those bigger than baseball... Angels Starting Pitcher Killed After Ball GameQUOTE TMZ has learned Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton, California early this morning -- hours after he pitched in a game last night.
Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in to hit a light pole. Three people were killed in the crash: Nick, another man and a woman.
Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run. The suspect is currently being treated for injuries in a local hospital.
We're told one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization.
Nick was 22 years old.
FYI -- Nick pitched his ass off last night, striking out 5 guys in 6 scoreless innings. His performance was hailed by sportswriters as a "brilliant effort by a 22-year-old right-hander making his fourth Major League start." As I always disclaim in the MLB forum, I never root for injuries/illness for any team, as I want my team to engage their competition when both are at 100%, but this tragedy is at a whole other level than an elbow sprain or a hamstring tear.... I can't imagine the shock and sorrow. Words can't express ... Thoughts and prayers to Nick's friends and family and to their extended Halo family.

Oh my. How sad. May we all reflect on the significance on the life that we are given, how short it really is, and especially short for some.
--------------------
Two GM's overheard at lunch during the All-Star break:
One asks the other the classic ethnic joke question, "How many Poles does it take to change a light bulb?" The second GM chuckles and mutters, "One more than they got in the room!" They both laugh. The talk turns to baseball and the first GM wonders aloud "How many Mariners does it take to score a run?"
Without missing a beat, the second GM responds with his own question, "What month?" Number 1 shakes his head a little baffled, "Whaddaya mean what month?" Number 2 says, "It depends on what month." Number 1 plays along, "OK, July."
GM number 2 then states confidently: "Then the answer is twenty-six. If it had been September it would depend on how many players they called up."

Wow, that is unbelievable. You know one thing that often isn't considered is the fact that MLB players often work until late in to the night (I'm not sure how long after a, say 10 PM finish, they stick around the park) but that really maximizes the chances of getting in an accident with a drunk driver - especially on weekends I bet. Very sad, either way.

Someone posted a quote on AngelsWin from a recent article (no link)... QUOTE "How fitting that this kid, for one night, after working his way back from injury, after rising through the Angels farm system, with his dad watching in the stands, pitched the best game of his career and walked off the mound to a standing ovation from 40,000+ people at Angel Stadium. This kid, for at least one night, was king. Heaven must have needed an Angel with a good fastball and a knee-buckling curve." ::tears::

On the game...I still love Gutierrez like a brother right now...what a great catch he just made...this after another good AB and a run scored.
I'm just stunned that Adenhart is dead...this is HORRIBLE...I want to beat the Angels as much as anyone, but I'm totally without words here...I can't believe this happened...

A sad day for baseball, certainly.
And a not-so-subtle reminder for keeping 1-run-losses in proper perspective.

You know...we've played the Twins very well in this series and tey're a pretty good team on paper. I'm not worried too much about the one-run losses. Of course when you lose a promising young kid from the game for no reason at all, you don't tend to worry too much about anything stupid like the standings.

Much emotion here. The sadness for the player, his family, and everyone in major league baseball. It's also hard not to feel a great anger at the drunken coward who not only killed him, but ran from the scene.
The game between the Angels and A's has been canceled tonight. I can't imagine how either team could have played that game.
--------------------
Pay no attention to all the frustrating losses. It's all part of the master plan. Even number years are bad luck for the Mariners. It's all about 2011, and preparing for a World Series run next year.

I feel somewhat conflicted...I have a lot to say about the game in progress...but it somehow does not seem right to continue to be so animated about the game on the field...at least not today.

The Angels should take a page from their division rivals and hang Adenhart's jersey in the dugout. For every game in 2009.

The 2010 Seattle Mariners have- screw it, their playoff hopes are essentially dead. Adopt-a-player: Bobby "Spuds" LaFromboise (as dubbed by Lonnie). 2010 stats: 14 G, 74.1 IP, 7 HR, 23 BB, 67 K, 4.36 ERA in A+ High Desert. Neutralize his stats and he'd be running a 3.55 FIP. Adopted but grown and gone: Doogie FISTER, M.D., specializing in groundballs. NOW MLB CERTIFIED!!! Blog: Dead Cat's Bounce. Net Runs scoring system shelved until further notice.
