This is our season long thread for "''phant stomping" (all in good fun, of course!) and general news and notes for about our rivals in Oak Town.

Manager Bob Geren just announced that Justin Duchscherer will have arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow early next week, presumably to determine the source of continual sorenees in his elbow. The surgeon and location have yet to be announced. Recovering from surgery, even if nothing major is discovered to be repaired, likely would take six weeks at a minimum.

Duchscherer referred reporters to Geren when asked for comment.

Whoo-hoo!

Nice little road trip...
  • 4-game split in Minny
  • 3-game sweep in OakTown!

(and one shut out in each series!)

A little blurb from the SanFrancisco Chronicle

Quote

"They were masterful performances by both guys," Geren said.

Cahill got a standing ovation from the crowd of 12,127 in the seventh inning, when he yielded his first hit of the game - a line drive up the middle. Not much was getting into the air as Cahill used a good sinker to get the Mariners to ground into 13 outs.

Bedard allowed only one runner to advance to second base, but he struck out Eric Chavez with two runners on in the fourth. His fastball was in the low-90s, had good cutting action and consistently hit the corners.

Ryan Sweeney led off the ninth with a single to left and moved to second on Orlando Cabrera's sacrifice bunt. Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu called on reliever David Aardsma, who struck out Jason Giambi, walked Matt Holliday and got Jack Cust to line out to left to end a nine-pitch at-bat.

"It's disappointing," Cust said. "You're going to run into a guy who throws like Bedard did today, so you have to capitalize on other opportunities."

The A's have stranded 53 runners in their last five games and were swept at home by Seattle for the first time since September 2007.

"You look at our lineup and there are guys who are struggling right now, but they're going to hit," Geren said. "They've always hit and they will hit. The key to our success is guys pitching well, and I'm very encouraged by our pitching."

Yikes - I know it was Easter, but that's pretty pathetic attendance for the 3rd game of the opening home stand.

And that stranded runner ratios seems more like Seattle Circa 2008 :P

Unfortunately, this time in OakTown, pathetic was a more apt description of the M's play (in just about every aspect) rather than the A's attendance.

It's hard to stomp on the 'phants with the season they are having so far. Because of this, I'm actually rooting for them to beat the hated Red Sox.
And, what do you know - they currently lead the first game of the series in Fenway 5-0 in the bottom of the 6th.

I'm off to the M's/O's game, but just wanted to say Go A's!

(now watch, they will go on one of their typical 15-20 game win streaks :( )

A's MVP Desme retires for priesthood

Top Oakland prospect had breakout season in '09

Milb.com story

"I love the game, but I aspire to higher things," Desme said during a media conference call. "I really kept this to myself, I kept it from the baseball community. Not many people knew."

The Oakland A's had high expectations for Grant Desme following a breakout 2009 season, including a potential invite to Spring Training. On Friday, the California native told the club he had other plans.

Former KC Royal, long time Mariner killer, and new Oakland Athletic, David DeJesus, who we will see (19) times a year now, came over in the steal of the century on November 10th, 2010. DeJesus, a 30 & 100 guy, with speed, was traded to Oakland for Justin Marks and Vin Mazzaro.

Marks was drafted in the third round of June 2009 draft by Oakland. He spent the remaining time of the 2009 season in Arizona and he progressed in 2010 between the Midwest League mostly and then he had a cup of Joe in the California League. he has a combined 5.29 era in the minors as a starter.

Mazzaro, also a starter, was drafted by Oakland in the 3rd round of the 2005. He made 35 starts the past two years for the A's big club and he went 10-17, with a (4.72) era combined over 2009 & 2010.

The KC Royals organization has to be the worst run in the big leagues. Billy Beane just robbed them with a gun in this deal.
