$17.4 million is the going rate for a qualifying offer this year. MLB Trade Rumors indicates 9 players will receive a qualifying off this year. (You can view the list of 9 at MLBTR)

That sure seems like some insane money to me. Leaves me uncertain as to how that kind of money is justifiable.

I think I'm going to run these numbers by my boss and see if he'll extend a qualifying offer to me! ohmy.png tongue.png

Hosmer and Santana both got qualifying offers!  Kind of surprising to me.  Supernatural almost (that was a Santana pun, in case you missed it!)

Kind of unfortunate for a team looking to fill a hole at 1B.

I'd say that perhaps the best value available for the M's to nab for 1B is in keeping Alonso.

Between the A's and M's, he was better than Santana with the bat and right on par with Hosmer, but won't come with nearly as high a price tag. I really don't see them chasing the sexily expensive acquisition when they got the value equivalent right in front of them.

Getting a free agent is sometimes just like buying OTC medications -- absolutely never should you pay $15 for the name brand when the store brand is the EXACT same thing but only costs you $5. That's an extra $10 that can be better spent on something else -- like SP or something.

AAPs:

Herschel Mack Just call me 'Boog' Powell IV has just been promoted to The Show for the first time and is hoping to stick around for a couple dozen years or so.

Joe Snake Eyes Wieland has been a mid-K, super-low-BB, Groundball machine in the minors and has a ~90 mph FB.  With his potential for masterful zone control, he's looking like the textbook Dipoto-type SP.

Gone, but not forgotten AAPs:
Nick Franklin

Brad Miller

Roenis Elias

Something horrible happened to Franklin and Elias.  Franklin was as sexy a blue-chipper as the M's have seen in a while, but it never materialized.  Elias was a bulldog with lots of Moxy, but fell off.  Miller, after looking like he'll never stick at SS or learn the OF, is forcing the Rays to play him somewhere because of his bat.

If we sign someone who was offered a qualifying offer... I understand that we'll only lose a 3rd round draft pick.  Not really that much of a deterrent.  The bigger deterrent is that both Hosmer and Santana were already offered qualifying offers, so it will take more than 18 million to get them for a year (or maybe they'd sign a 3 or 4 year deal at a much lower annual rate to get the security of a guaranteed amount).   But that still seems like a lot for a 1B who hit around 25 HR last year (Hosmer has never hit more than 25 in a year... but he hit 25 in both 2016 and 2017... Santana hit 23 last year but 34 in 2016).

It looks like Ohtani can play some corner OF between starts... if he were to take a day off after a start, if things were planned right with respect to days that the team has off anyway maybe he could get aobut 110 starts in the OF and 32 starts on the mound (and as many pitching starts in NL parks as possible).  Or, maybe they could have him start every sixth or seventh game and get something like 25 starts for the year (to let him rest more between starts).

A cool thing that I would like to see would be if he has noticeable splits as a pitcher or if someone seems to have his number (i.e. has hit him hard all game, and then comes up in a late high leverage situation) would be for him to start an inning pitching, then when the guy who has been hitting him comes up bring in a reliever for one batter or a LH specialist in a tough situation and have Ohtani go to the OF, and then after the reliever gets the guy have Ohtani come back to the mound and finish out the inning.

I hope the Mariners are talking to him... It would be cool to see how his transition to MLB goes "up close".

We need to get this Ohtani guy.  We deserve it after 16 years without playoffs.  The last time we got a high impact japanese like him was the last time we got into the playoffs.

I know we need pitching, and a lot of it but, it's official, Giancarlo Stanton is available. Yes I know that blows the budget for pitching but I can wish can't I......

Thyago Vieira to the White Sox for intl.bonus money.

Are we gonna actually make a push for Ohtani?! I read that they will send a group to Japan including Griffey to try and sway him to the M's!

There is an MLB News Alert circulating saying Otani is in limbo after reported MLBPA challenge.  Sounds like MLB and the NBP had worked out a deal to extend the expired posting system but the MLBPA has yet to approve that extension or may not approve the extension....

Find this article at Yahoo Sports, Liz Roscher, Big League Stew.

MLB, NBP and MLBPA reach posting extension agreement.......  Ohtoni will be posted by 12-1-17 and he will most likely have a new home stateside before Christmas.

The sweep stakes gate is about to open, who do you think lands the kid?

I like to think we have a chance to get Ohtani.  I would like it if he didn't go to the Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers, or Dodgers...  that would be pretty boring (says a guy who is not a fan of any of those four teams).

I love the idea of having a guy who can be in the starting rotation and play in the field when he isn't pitching.  Baseball has become so specialized...  wouldn't it be fun to see a player who could be a starting pitcher AND an everyday player... ?

Regarding Ryon Healy, I'm a bit leery of that trade, even though I'm a University of Oregon alum and Duck fan.  Healy has a fairly low OBP...  he does have some power, he is just 25, maybe still developing as a player.  I didn't like giving up Pagan, but maybe with Healy under control for a while and cheaply so, it will free up more money for other things.

Let's get a useful starting pitcher, and a good outfielder.  Ohtani!  LOL
