He hit the first grand slam in Mariner history on May 17th, 1977 (box score). in a 10-2 Mariner win as neither starter, Rudy May of the Orioles or Dick Pole of the Mariners, lasted more then 2.1 innings. Enrique Romo came in and pitched six scoreless innings for the win as Montague pitched the ninth and 10,920 watched. Rudy May gave up 5 hits, 4 BB and 7 earned runs.

The St. Louis Cardinals picked him in the 4th round of the 1968 MLB amateur draft. Who is he ? His name is Skip Jutze. He appeared in 42 games and 109 AB's with the 1977 Mariners & (.220) average.

Alfred Henry "Skip" Jutze was born May 28, 1946, in Bayside, New York and he went to Central Connecticut State University. He came up with the 1972 Cardinals in September and played in 21 games. He was a fourth round pick of the Cards back in 1968. In November of 1972 the Cards traded him (with Milt Ramirez) to Houston Astros for Ray Busse and Bobby Fenwick.

He hit .223 in 90 games for the Astros with no power in 1973 and that would be his high water mark in games played for his career. Played in 42 games for the Astros in 1976 and was shipped to Seattle in January of 1977 to play on the expansion Mariners. 1977 was his last year in the bigs.

Darrell Johnson was the manager of the 1977 expansion Mariners. He was a player, manager, coach,
and scout. On August 25, 1927, he was born in Horace, Nebraska and went to school in nearby Ord. Both
Horace and Ord are about 50 miles North of Grand Island, which isn't an island at all but there is at least four rivers running in
and around there. At first, settlers thought it to be an island.

Johnson had a long and winding road as a player, coach, and manager. He passed on May 6th, 2004. Great read:

Former Mariner, Padres manager Bud Black was named the National League's Manager of the Year today in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He was listed on 26 of the 32 ballots cast, receiving 16 first place votes. His 104 point total was one better than Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker, making it one of the closest races in the history of BBWAA balloting.

Black, 53, led the Padres to a 90-72 record in 2010, the most wins by the Padres since they won a franchise-record 98 contests in 1998. San Diego posted the fifth-best record in the National League while going an even 45-36 both at home and on the road.

Black made his managerial debut with the Padres in 2007. On July 19, it was announced that the Padres extended his contract through the 2013 season with club options for the 2014 and 2015 campaigns. In four seasons with San Diego, he has led the club to a 317-332 (.488) record.

Black was drafted by the Mariners in the 1979 free agent draft. He came up and pitched in two games for the Mariners in September of 1981. In March of 1982 he was traded to the Kansas City Royals for Manny Castillo. Black pitched in the 1985 ALCS and World Series for the Royals.

Ryan Feierabend, who was just cut loose in early November by the M's, was invited to Spring Training by the Phillies. The Phillies, who are looking to add lefty bullpen help, quickly snatched him up after he was released by the Mariners. You would think the M's would be interested in lefty bullpen help. The previous Mariner administration didn't put a big priority on situational lefties or any lefties for that matter. The M's put so much time and effort into Feierbend that cutting him loose is a suprise unless they thought that he would be available, when all the dust settled.

Feierabend was drafted by the Mariners in the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft out of Midview High School in Grafton, Ohio. He bumped around in the M's system and was named triple A pitcher of the year in the M's system for 2008. In March of 2009, he had left elbow surgery and missed all of 2009. In 2010, Ryan pitched in A+, AA and AAA ball in the M's system. He wasn't sharp but he missed a full year due to surgery. He turned in a great effort for the AAA Tacoma Rainiers in the playoffs, particularly in a start vs the Memphis Redbirds (8.0 inn, 2 H, R, 0 BB, 4K, 1 HR) in the battle for the PCL Flag. In the AAA Championship Game, the Columbus Clippers roughed him up good but what we watched seemed encouraging.

Former Mariner Jarrod Washburn said a couple of weeks ago that he was undecided about returning. Washburn sat out in 2010 because IMHO, there wasn't a sucker around to cough up enough dough for him come off the farm and pitch again. Wash pitched for the M's from 2006 to half of 2009 before being shipped to the Tigers for Mauricio Robles and Luke French. Wash benefited from pitching in Safeco with the addition of some speedy outfielders who chased down his fly balls that he often throws. With Detroit, Wash was rocked for a 7.33 era in 43 innings - eight starts and a 1-3 record. He set a career highs in hits per nine innings at (10.7) and (2.5) HR per nine innings while with the Tigers.

"I will not say I am 100 percent retired because a great opportunity might present itself."

http://www.mlbtrader...about-2011.html

Morosi adds that a great opportunity translates as close to Washburn's Wisconsin home. The Brewers or Twins might be his top choices, and both teams should be in the hunt for starting pitching. One point in Milwaukee's favor is their hiring of Ron Roenicke, who worked with Washburn during his Angels days.

http://www.mlbtrader...d-washburn.html

Brewers and Twins are interested in Wash. He lives in the wilds of Brew Crew Country and a spot close to home is attractive. The Twins ballpark might be a fit for Wash but the Brewers' park will prove to be a launching pad for would be missles off the bats of visitors as Jarrod's fastball is flat and to the liking of sluggers.

I was checking out this year's AL MVP voting for former Mariners. Adrian Beltre finished 9th, Sin-Soo Choo finished 14th and A-Rod finished 15th. I'm happy that A-Rod finished third in the list of former Mariners and he just beat out two current Mariners, Felix Hernanadez who finished 16th, and Ichiro who finished 17th.

Burleigh Grimes, the last legal spitballer, said that there were more spitters being thrown in the 1960s than back when it was legal. Estimates for the number of pitchers who threw a "wet one" in the big leagues ran as high as 50. Every time a pitcher went on a hot streak, whether it be Don Drysdale or Juan Marichal, he was accused of throwing illegal pitches. Bob Shaw, the new Giant, was one of the more nefarious practitioners. Upset at Shaw's offerings one 1964 day, Milwaukee manager Bobby Bragan ordered his pitchers to throw nothing but spitballs for the last six innings of a game to show that umpires didn't care about enforcing the rule. In another Shaw outing, Philadelphia manager Gene Mauch coached third base to get a better look, and asked the umpires to inspect the ball every time he saw something suspicious.

Eleven victories shy of 300, Perry signed with the Braves in January 1981, and finished the season with an 8-9 record. He likely missed out on winning his 300th game with Atlanta because of the player strike that shut down the game for seven weeks in mid-summer. After the Braves let him go, he spent most of the winter without a job before finally signing in March 1982 with the Seattle Mariners. His career victory total then stood at 297

Moyer figures he will miss all of 2011 recovering from the Tommy John procedure. He wants to come back in 2012, he wants to pitch when he's 50 and he wants to win his 300th game...

...since the good ship Mariner is floundering in the flotsam and jetsam for at least another year or two, wouldn't it be cool if they brought Jamie Moyer back to win his 300th ? Certainly, they couldn't afford him ! Moyer has a whole new cottage industry pitching geritol to the masses !

-It has been reported that former Mariner Jamie Moyer has underwent successful Tommy John Surgery to replace a ligament in his pitching elbow. In a press release following the surgery, Moyer said that he looked forward to the challenge of coming back at age 49 in the 2012 season.

RA Dickey has done well since the Mariners, or the Mets are just crazy with money--- regardless:

The deal will guarantee Dickey $7.8 million. He otherwise would have been eligible for free agency next offseason. He gets a $1 million signing bonus, $2.25 million this year and $4.25 million in 2012 under Monday's agreement. The Mets have a $5 million option for 2013 with a $300,000 buyout.

Mike Morse wins the starting left field position for the Nats with a strong showing in camp this spring. I always likes Mike's bat. Reports say the defense has improved. If not for Milton Bradley we would probably be looking at a complete player swap, as Langerhans has had a great spring as well.
